Fostering is looking after someone else's children in your own home, when his or her family is unable to do so.
There are varied reasons for this; it can be due to illness, relationship problems, family breakdown or a situation where it becomes unsafe for a child or young person to remain in the home.
Foster carers provide a safe, secure and stable environment for these young people, working with them, their family and the authorities to enable children to return to their home as quickly as possible.
Foster care can last for days, months or even years. Most children return to their own families eventually, while others may receive long term support.
